About Beniamin Czapla
Beniamin Czapla is a historian of economy and society in the 19th century. He works on the economic history of the 19th century and the social history of that age – especially Polish enterprise and the biographies of people who built firms and brands beyond Poland’s borders. He is best known for “Antoni Patek. Watchmaker to the Kings”; his other books include “Patek, Czapek and Others” and the English-language “Czapek. We collect rare people”. His books have appeared with Iskry Publishing House, among others; he also works as a film consultant and speaker.
As a historian of economy he studies the Great Emigration, the November Uprising and the economic life of Poles abroad. Figures such as Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek open a wider story of entrepreneurship, social networks, prestige and identity in 19th-century Europe. The history of manufactures and brands is part of the history of society – not an end in itself.
At the centre stands economy and society in the 19th century: capital, craft, reputation and social mobility. Through biographies of Polish entrepreneurs one sees how individuals and firms helped shape modern economic Europe while remaining tied to Polish identity.
He shares his work in the media, in lectures and in essays – including as a contributing editor to Zegarki i Pasja, writing about brand histories and the people behind them. He takes part in events on economic history, biography and the legacy of Polish emigration.
In 2022 he received the Literary Magazine “Książki” Award in the non-fiction category. He was also a finalist for the Polityka Passports awards for a debut in the scientific and popular-science categories (for 2021). Professionally, since 2019 he has been affiliated with the Institute of Regional Research at the Silesian Library in Katowice, where he works as a research assistant.
